Narrator:
It’s the end of the week on the island of Molokai, Hawaii.
Here, the aloha spirit, with its love of peace, and love of life, is strong. And Molokai’s people are happy to let the busy world pass them by.
Welcome to the Hotel Molokai’s Friday night jam. A meeting of good people and good music. This is the heart of Molokai, and everyone is welcome.
Vani Ainoa:
“Friday night is called Kanikapili night. It’s a Hawaiian jam session and if you got an instrument, whether you play the spoon or the pots, you’re welcome to come and join us.”
Narrator:
Neighbors and strangers come together, locals and a few tourists, non-Hawaiians and native Hawaiians. The only thing that matters is the music.
Julia Hoe:
“Molokai is just a very laid–back, slow pace island. There is no rushing. Just absorb the beauty of Molokai.
Richard Cooke:
“Molokai’s always been known as the friendly island and it really is. There’s a realness that comes out in the people here and I think they’re incredibly strong as a result of it.”
Narrator:
Photographer Richard Cooke grew up on Molokai. His family has been here for generations. Many years have passed since Richard was a child here. But in many ways, Molokai is the same place it was 50 years ago.
With only one hotel, the island is a peaceful place and the roads are quiet. In fact, there are so few cars here that the streets have no need for traffic lights.
Julia Hoe:
“Many times, a lot of the people that come and visit our island want to make big changes, but you know what? We don’t need the changes.”
Vani Ainoa:
“We could live with what we got. This is what’s so beautiful. We don’t need whatever the other islands have. We can live with whatever we have here.”
Narrator:
Molokai has one of the largest populations of native Hawaiians … and perhaps their peaceful ways and strength of identity is what attracts others to this place.
Julia Hoe:
“We took time to work, we took time to play, we took time to rest. Truly. And that’s what Hawaii’s all about, you know. The simplicity of life.”
